Homer E. Capehart was a successful businessman. In 1938 he organized and financed the "Cornfield Conference" on his farm in Daviess County, Indiana which attracted 20,000 people and rejuvenated the Republican Party. The success of the Cornfield Conference launched Capehart's political career and he was elected Senator from Indiana from 1945 to 1963. In 1962 he was narrowly defeated for reelection to the Senate by Birch Bayh. |
