Part of page one and two of the July 7, 1973 edition of the Times-Herald newspaper in Washington, Indiana. On the front page was an article about Joseph "Joe" Harbstreit who operated a truck farm north of Washington with his brother, Walter. Their grandfather, William "Bill" Harbstreit started the farm operation in 1888. Also mentioned in the article was Bruce Rogers, the owner of Rogers' Red and White Grocery in Washington, who frequently bought produce from the Harbstreit brothers. On page two was the column, "25 Years Ago Today," about events that occurred on July 7, 1948. One event was a rally to be held on Senator Homer Capehart's farm north of Washington at which Gov. Thomas E. Dewey from New York and Gov. Earl Warren from California were scheduled to speak. Dewey and Warren were respectively the Republican nominees for president and vice-president in the 1948 election. |
