Mr. Stevens worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company. He was one of two men who escaped death when switch engine 401 crashed through the Blue Hole trestle west of Washington on March 27, 1913. Four employees drowned while Stevens and Dan Tucker were swept down river and lodged in tree tops along Hawkins Creek. They were rescued several hours later. When the B & O offices in Flora and Washington were consolidated, Stevens was promoted to superintendent of the division. He and his family left Washington in 1929 when he became superintendent of the Newark, Ohio B & O division. |
