Description |
Picture postcard of the flooded West Fork of the White River near the site of the March 27, 1913 Blue Hole train disaster west of Washington, Indiana that claimed the lives of four railroad employees: Theodore Gharst, Reason Jackson, Clifford McLemore, and Daniel L. Shaffer. Extensive flooding weakened the supports the Blue Hole trestle and it collapsed when crossed by Engine 401 and its trailing flatcar. The engine, flatcar, and six railroad employees fell into Blue Hole. Only two men, C. Glenn Stevens and Daniel Tucker, survived. This photo was taken after the diaster where a search was conducted for the bodies of the victims. The second image is writing on the back of the postcard. |
