Description |
Two copies of a picture postcard taken by Charles R. Luder of the crowd of spectators that descended on the site of the March 27, 1913 Blue Hole train disaster west of Washington, Indiana that claimed the lives of four railroad employees: Theodore Gharst, Reason Jackson, Clifford McLemore, and Daniel L. Shaffer. Extensive flooding of the West Fork of the White River weakened the supports the Blue Hole trestle and it collapsed when crossed by Engine 401 and its trailing flatcar. The engine, flatcar, and six railroad employees fell into Blue Hole. Only two men, C. Glenn Stevens and Daniel Tucker, survived. On the reverse is written "donated by Mildred Ishum Rogers." This is the same photo as 2019.FIC.0759.0003. On the reverse of both postcards is writing. |
