Description |
Picture postcard taken at the site of the March 27, 1913 Blue Hole train disaster west of Washington, Indiana that claimed the lives of four railroad employees: Theodore Gharst, Reason Jackson, Clifford McLemore, and Daniel L. Shaffer. Extensive flooding of the West Fork of the White River weakened the supports the Blue Hole trestle and it collapsed when crossed by Engine 401 and its trailing flatcar. The engine, flatcar, and six railroad employees fell into Blue Hole. Only two men, C. Glenn Stevens and Daniel Tucker, survived. This photo was taken of the post-accident repairs to the damaged trestle. On the reverse is written "donated by Virginia Brown Patterson." |
