Mr. Gharst worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company in Washington, Indiana. He was killed March 27, 1913 at the Blue Hole train diaster west of Washington. Extensive flooding of the West Fork of the White River had weakened the supports the Blue Hole trestle and it collapsed when crossed by Engine 401 and its trailing flatcar. The engine, flatcar, and six railroad employees fell into the flooded river. Four railroad employees died, Mr. Gharst, Reason Jackson, Clifford McLemore, and Daniel L. Shaffer. Two men survived, C. Glenn Stevens and Daniel Tucker. |
