Mr. Mattingly was selected as principal of schools in Odon, Indiana in 1887. In 1886 he became editor of the Gazette newspaper in Washington, Indiana. After being admitted to the bar in 1892, he joined William Heffernan in the law firm of Heffernan and Mattingly in Washington. He became chairman of the Republican Party in Daviess County in 1892. |

Ezra Mattingly graduated from the Southern Indiana Normal School in Mitchell, Indiana. In 1890 he began studying law and in 1892 was admitted to the bar. |

The ancestors of Ezra Mattingly were English Catholics who settled in the colony established by Lord Baltimore in 1634 that later became Maryland. The Mattinglys moved west through West Virginia and into Kentucky. Ezra's parents, Mr. & Mrs. James and Mary Ann (Berry) Mattingly were born in Mason County, Kentucky. |
