Summary |
"The Daviess County Lincoln Highway Association's Brief in Support of the Lincoln Route Through Daviess County, Indiana," (1931) presented to the Indiana Lincoln Highway Commission to prove Tom Lincoln's family, including his 21 year old son, Abraham Lincoln, traveled through Daviess County when moving from southern Indiana to Illinois in 1830. This is apparently the second edition of this brief. See 2020.FIC.0619 for the first edition. The pamphlet contains several affidavits from individuals who repeat stories told by relatives or friends, sometimes second or third hand, that the Lincoln party used a public road through Daviess County from the east fork of the White River to Apraw Ford at the west fork of the White River. One man, Elliott Chappell, claimed to have become friends with Abe Lincoln when the Lincoln family camped one night on the Jerry Allen farm in Harrison Township of Daviess County. Mr. Chappell said he received letters from Abe Lincoln after the Lincolns arrived in Illinois that confirmed Lincoln and Chappell had met in 1830. Unfortunately, the letters were destroyed in an 1916 house fire. This edition on pp. 8-10 emphasizes the "horse trade" between Tom Lincoln and Overton Cosby, Sr. Despite the skepticism of many historians about the "Lincoln Highway" thesis, the affidavits in the pamphlet provide a wealth of genealogical data about the families that lived in Daviess County in 1830. |
