William R. "Billy" Meredith was a prominent businessman in Washington, Indiana. In an article in a Washington newspaper at the time of his death in 1926, Mr. Meredith was described as "probably the richest man living in Daviess County." (See Stella Bogner Scrapbook 3, 2019.FIC.0200.0007, Daviess County Museum, Rm 203A). He owned and lived at the Meredith Hotel on Main Street in Washington. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Meredith enlisted in the Union army. He served three years, first with the 65th Indiana Infantry Regiment and later with the 120th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He fought in the Battle of Franklin near Nashville, Tennessee in 1864. |

Mr. Meredith died April 2, 1926, not married, with no children or siblings and no surviving parents. He had a $1.25 million estate. In his Will dated July 2, 1912, Mr. Meredith left the bulk of his estate (consisting of real estate, stocks, bonds and bank accounts) to his unnamed first and second cousins living at the time of his death with the first cousins to receive twice as much as the second cousins. Mr. Meredith's Will was probated in the Daviess Circuit Court, Washington, Indiana on April 4, 1926. Citizens Loan & Trust Co. of Washington, Indiana was the Executor. Litigation involving multiple family groups continued until 1933 to determine who was to inherit Mr. Meredith's estate. |
