Mr. Lavelle was an agent for the Terre Haute Brewing Co. for seven years. He was a teacher in Barr Township for six years. He worked for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. In 1876 he was appointed Daviess County Deputy Auditor by his brother, Thomas J. Lavelle, who was the Auditor. James C. Lavelle was elected Auditor of Daviess County in 1882. He served until his resignation on October 16, 1891 after the Daviess County Courthouse fire of October 7, 1891 which was caused by arson. A subsequent audit revealed a $18,464 shortage in the Auditor's office funds. On April 23, 1892 Lavelle was convicted of conspiring to cause the courthouse fire and was sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released in 1897. |
