Description |
Change purse belonging to Eleanor Edith Hastings (1905-1915), the daughter of Mr. Elmer E. Hastings (1870-1949) and Mrs. Bertha Jane (Garten) Hastings of Washington, Indiana. See 2023.FIC.0139 and 2023.FIC.0139.0001 for her 1909 photograph. Eleanor was holding this purse when the studio photograph was taken. Inside the purse is a "Personal Post Card" with a return address for John S. Hastings (1898-1977) in Chicago, Illinois. On the reverse of the postcard is a short handwritten biography about Eleanor that was likely written by John Hastings, Eleanor's brother. He was a prominent attorney in Washington, Indiana. In 1957 he was appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. Also inside the purse is a 1908 Barber U.S. dime. |
