A composite of photographs of students in Lela L. Lee's first grade class at the West End School on West Van Trees Street in Washington, Indiana during school year 1967-1968. Miss Lee's photo is on the top row, third from the left. The photo of James P. Montgomery, school principal, is on the top row, to the right of Ms. Lee.The names of the students are written on the reverse. Also written on the reverse is "#1128" which is a reference to the Thelma Bingham books at the Daviess County Museum. She wrote this item was part of the "Lela Lee Collection" donated to the Museum in April 1985 by Edker Lee, Miss Lee's cousin. Lela L. Lee began teaching at the West End School in the early 1930s. With the entry of the United States into World War II, she enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army WACs. After the war she returned to Washington and resumed her career in education. She retired in 1968 after over 45 years of teaching. |
