Picture postcard of damage to St. Mary Catholic Church in Washington, Indiana caused by a July 11, 1938 storm. Written on the front is, "Cyclone 1938 Wash. Ind." This is one item in a large collection of picture postcards and newspaper photos showing extensive damage throughout Washington. Some of the items have written on them "#1611" which is a reference to the Thelma Bingham books at the Daviess County Museum. According to her entry this collection belonged to Pete Emmick of Washington and was donated to the Museum by his daughter, Jayne Gayle. In 2008 the two Catholic parishes in Washington, St. Mary and St Simon, were merged and named Our Lady of Hope. St. Mary Catholic Church was demolished in 2010 and the ground on which it stood along with the rectory and the St. Mary School were sold. |
