Description |
1913 photograph of steam locomotive 401 being extracted from the Blue Hole west of Washington, Indiana. Extensive flooding of the West Fork of the White River weakened the supports of the Blue Hole trestle and it collapsed on March 27, 1913 when crossed by Engine 401 and its trailing flatcar. The engine, flatcar, and six B & O Railroad employees fell into Blue Hole. The diaster claimed the lives of four of the men: Theodore Gharst, Reason Jackson, Clifford McLemore, and Daniel L. Shaffer. The other two employees, C. Glenn Stevens and Daniel Tucker, survived. |
