Summary |
"A Fever In The Heartland" (2023) by Timothy Egan that chronicles the rise and fall of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana during the 1920s and its Grand Dragon, David "D. C." Stephenson. Egan writes about "Lick Skillet Hollow, Indiana" (pp. 334-336), known as "Lickskillet' in Daviess County. Stephenson stored in the Round Barn on Highway 57 south of Washington documents incriminating several prominent Republican politicians involved with the Ku Klux Klan. In 1925 Stephenson was convicted of murdering Madge Oberholtzer and was sent to prison. When he did not receive a pardon from the government officials the KKK helped elect, Stephenson in revenge arranged to have the incriminating documents turned over to the press.
