Summary |
A pamphlet, "Along The Road To Freedom," by Dan Donofrio about the Underground Railroad in Daviess County, Indiana. The 1850 Fugitive Slave Act prompted abolitionists and anti-slavery activists to set up a system of safe houses or "stations" to assist escaped slaves in their effort to reach freedom in Canada. According to the author, there were several Underground Railroad "stations" in Daviess County. The author also discusses various slaves who were brought to Daviess County by early settlers in 1806. Isaac and Jake, owned by Catherine Merril, brought a lawsuit in Daviess County and won their freedom. |
