Cannelburg, Indiana |
Details |
Cannelburg, Indiana is a town in Barr Township of Daviess County, Indiana. The town was formerly known as Clark's Station which had a railroad depot and a post office. In 1872 A. J. Shotwell, L. C. Harris and Anthony Moots, the owners of Buckeye Cannel Coal Co., platted the new town of Cannelburg with 102 lots. The town was named after the cannel coal that was discovered and mined in the area. Most of the land in and around the town was owned by Buckeye Cannel Coal Co., including the town's general store. In 1884 Cannelburg was incorporated and 44 additional lots were added. In 1886 the town had a population of 350, a good school and was steadily growing because of the coal mines in the area. With the demise of the coal industry, the population of Cannelburg has dwindled. In the 2010 census, the town's population was 135. |
