Amish settlement |
Details |
The roots of Amish religious and cultural beliefs began with the Anabaptist movement in Switzerland, Holland and Austria in 1825. Unhappy with both the Roman Catholic and Protestant Reformation doctrines, the Anabaptist wished to simplify the Christian doctrine. The Anabaptists practiced adult baptism rather than infant baptism, renounced the use of oaths, and rejected worldly materials, ideas and actions. Their beliefs brought them severe persecution, including torture and death, by state sponsored churches in Europe. The Amish began to migrate to North America in 1727 with large concentrations developing in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The first Amish families to come to Daviess County, Indiana were the Gingerichs and the Grabers in the late 1860s and the Waglers in 1871. The Gingerichs settled northeast of Odon and the Grabers near Montgomery. The Amish settlement near Odon disappeared, but the Montgomery settlement has flournished and spread into the Odon area. The Amish beieve spiritual well-being demands non-conformity to the world. Plain dress and the use of horses and buggies are the two most visible signs of Amish non-conformity. Plain dress and a rural way of life are typical of Old Order Amish. They will not bear arms or participate in violence either in war or in self-defense. |
