Hillory lived in Harrison Township, Daviess County, Indiana. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he joined the Knights of the Golden Circle who were sympathetic to the Confederate cause. Hillory was involved with the murder of Captain Eli McCarty, a Union Army draft officer, in Daviess County on October 3, 1864. Hillory fled Indiana to Missouri and where he joined William Quantrill's raiders who were fighting for the Confederacy. |
