Occupation	When Mr. Gardiner first came to Indiana in 1857, he was employed for two or three years as a bridge carpenter with the B & O and O & M railroad companies. He was a teacher at Shoals, Plainville and Washington, Indiana. In 1862 he "read the law" with Judge Matthew F. Burke and with Jesse W. Burton both of Washington, Indiana. He was admited to bar in late 1862 and in 1863 opened his first law office at Dover Hill in Martin County. After a year he returned to Washington and opened a law office with William Thompson. In 1867 he was appointed by Govenor Conrad Baker as Judge of the common pleas court. He had a general practice of law in Washington for many years. In later years he was partner in the law firm of Gardiner & Gardiner with his sons, Charles G. and William Ray, Jr.
