Joseph M. Cabel in 1839 emigrated from Germany to New Orleans in America. Later he traveled by steamboat to Evansville, Indiana. From Evansville he walked to Washington, Indiana. In 1852 he and George Kauffman, Jr. established the firm of Cabel & Kauffman that became a prominent mercantile and grocery business on Main Street in Washington. |
