A November 14, 1918 letter from Ray (last name not given) in the U. S. Army in France to his sister (name not given). The armistice ending the war was declared on November 11. Ray wrote about the "Spanish Flu," said he was "O.K." and that "the war is over." He told his sister his outfit was "in the last big drive and went over the top." He wrote, "I came back without a scratch but with a far different view of war." He said he had been in the German trenches on November 13 (two days after the war ended) and "talked to the Germans." He added, "They [are] certainly happy that [the war] is all over." This letter may have been published in Odon Journal newspaper. In 2024 John & Sue Myers on behalf of the Odon Journal donated this letter to the Daviess County Museum. |
