Records concerning the business dealings of Francis P. Bradley (1812-1868) and Matthew L. Brett (1823-1896) of Washington, Indiana. Mr. Bradley was born December 10, 1812 in County Londonderry in what is now Northern Ireland. He emigrated to the United States, settled in Washington, Indiana and became an attorney. Matthew L. Brett was born in Edgefield, South Carolina to Patrick M. Brett and Mary (Lalor) Brett on January 5, 1823. Patrick Brett emigrated from Ireland to South Carolina in about 1818. The Brett family moved to Indiana in about 1829. At age 21, Matthew Brett became Auditor of Daviess County in 1844. He became a prominent business man and banker in Washington. The nature of the business relationship between Mr. Bradley and Mr. Brett is not known. The first image is a September 12, 1851 receipt given to Mr. Brett for money delivered on behalf of Mr. Bradley. The second and third images (front and back) concern an 1866 lawsuit filed in Vigo County, Indiana against Mr. Brett and Mr. Bradley by the Board of Trustees of The Wabash and Erie Canal. The fourth and fifth images is a January 11, 1869 receipt (front and back) for the settlement of the division of assets in the Bradley/Brett partnership following Mr. Bradley's death on July 27, 1868. The sixth image are receipts for taxes paid in 1864, 1865 and 1868 for real estate owned by "Brett & Bradley" in Daviess County. These documents are part of the Matthew Brett collection donated to the Daviess County Museum in 2023 by Claire (Cabel) Records. |
