"Washington, Indiana: Boyhood Memories of the 1940s," by Robert Anthony Brothers. Mr. Brothers was born in Washington, Indiana, the son of Robert John Brothers (1912-1976) and Catherine (Gardner) Brothers (1913-1993). His 23 page memoir recounts his family, childhood, friends, growing up in the "West End," and his Catholic education in his beloved hometown of Washington. The first sentence of his memoir reads: "My hometown of Washington, Indiana, was a Paradise in the 1940s. The apple in the Garden of Eden could not have tasted so sweet." He graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1952. After gaining knowledge of good and evil, Mr. Brothers joined the U.S. Army in 1954, left paradise, had a long and distinguished career in print journalism and "never again lived in the Midwest." This magnificent memoir can be viewed in the Research Room of the Daviess County Museum. Mr. Brothers has been a frequent contributor to the Daviess County Museum donating numerous historic photos, records, newspaper articles, interviews and family genealogies. |
