April 29,1954 letter from Edwin Estell, Superintendent of the Washington, Indiana City Schools notifying Bessie A. Brown that she has been reappointed as a teacher. Despite not having graduated from high school, Ms. Brown started her teaching career at Barr Township District School 4 in Daviess County, Indiana and taught there from 1908 to 1912. She attended Central Normal College (a teachers college) in Danville, Indiana in 1908. She attended Marion Normal College in Marion, Indiana from 1909 to 1910. She attended Indiana State Teachers College starting in 1912 and earned a bachelor's degree in 1931. See Archives 2020.FIC.0215.0004 for her education and professional background from 1908 to 1931. Ms. Brown's teaching career spanned almost 50 years from 1908 to 1957. She taught four years at the Elementary School in Montgomery, Indiana. She taught in the Washington public school system from 1916 to 1957. |
