Original and four copies of a February 7, 1903 letter from Lewis "Lew" Wallace, a general during the Civil War who commanded the Union 3rd Division, to Alfred E. Johnson of Washington, Indiana. Mr. Johnson was in the 24th Indiana Infantry Regiment that was in the 3rd Division during the battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, April 6-7, 1862. Wallace was severely criticized when the 3rd Division arrived late on the Shiloh battlefield on April 6. Wallace's 3rd Division, including the 24th Indiana Regiment, was heavily involved in forcing the Confederate troops to withdraw on the second day of the battle. After the Civil War Wallace wrote the popular novel, "Ben Hur." |
