Scope & Content |
Typed transcript of an undated newspaper article (ca. 1890-1900) from the Washington Daily newspaper published in Washington, Indiana about Grandison Thomas Cosby (1858-1938) and Francis Mathias "Frank" Zinkan (1843-1924) being found "in contempt of court" by Judge David J. Hefron (1842-1910) of the Daviess Circuit Court for attempting to "buy and set up juries." Both Zinkan and Cosby claimed they "did not know the enormity of the offense" and pleaded for mercy. Judge Hefron commented he was "not surprised" by Mr. Cosby's conduct. Judge Hefron said he was "humiliated beyond expression" that someone with Mr. Zinkan's reputation for "integrity, sobriety and industry" would do such a thing. This transcript was found in the research papers of Donald R. Cosby (1931-2023), who was the Daviess County Historian from 2016 to 2022 and the great nephew of Grandison Thomas Cosby. |
