Copy of a page from an unknown publication (ca. 1938-1940) with photographs about the Cornfield Conference held August 27, 1938 on Homer E. Capehart's farm in northern Daviess County, Indiana. Capehart was a successful businessman and he organized and financed the Republican Party gathering. The conference attracted over 20,000 people and is credited with rejuvenating the Republican Party after the Democratic Party landslide in the 1936 presidential election. The successful conference also made Capehart a well-known national figure and launched his political career. He subsequently was elected to three terms as a Senator from Indiana from 1945 to 1963. During that time he was a vocal advocate for free enterprise, conservative values. Capehart was married to Irma Viola (Mueller) Capehart and they had three children, Homer E. Capehart, Jr., Patricia Louise (Capehart) Pierson, and Thomas Charles Capehart. |
