Copy of a February 18, 1959 article in the Washington Herald newspaper about the closing of Sum Brothers Confectionary at 116 E. Main Street in Washington, Indiana. The article provides a history of the Sum brothers, Jacob "Jake" Sum (1843-1907) Desiderius "Jesse" Sum (1850-1941) and Mathias "Matt" Sum (1849-1918), who opened their business in 1865 at 106 East Main in Washington. In 1910 the new Sum's Brothers building was constructed at 116 E. Main in Washington. Initially Sums Brothers was a cigar making business, but they branched out into ice cream, oyster and candy. The business was carried on by Joseph Sum (1894-1948) and Henry Sum (1897-1980), the sons of Mathias Sum. Find a Grave reports are included on Mathias, Jacob, Desiderius, Joseph Sum and Henry Sum. |
