Undated report, "1849 Gold Rush," (ca. 1990-2000) written by Donald R. Cosby, Daviess County Historian, about the adventures of Ephriam W. Thompson and John & William Shanks from Washington, Indiana who made the arduous journey to California after gold was discovered in 1849. Mr. Cosby spelled Mr. Thompson's given name as "Ephraim" which is how the name was spelled in Goodspeed's "History of Knox and Daviess Counties." Mr. Thompson was president of the Washington National Bank from 1885 to 1897. In a 1972 pamphlet published by Washington National Bank, Mr. Thompson's first name was spelled "Ephriam."
