December 30, 1970 handwritten letter from James A. Ellis of Brownsburg, Indiana to the Daviess County Historical Society (DCHS) in Washington, Indiana asking for assistance in genealogy research concerning his grandfather, James Bailey Ellis, of Daviess County, Indiana. Also included is a January 6, 1971 response from William Brooks Allen, a member of DCHS, and a January 7, 1971 thank you letter from Mr. Ellis. William P. Ellis was mayor of Washington from 1884 to 1887. In a November 16, 1885 letter to Mayor Ellis from W. W. Peabody, President and General Manager of the Ohio Mississippi Railway Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio, the railroad company offered to locate all of railroad's "machine shops" in Washington if the city would "donate 60 acres of land and $75,000 cash." See 2020.FIC.0505 in Archives. The offer was accepted by Mayor Ellis and the common council. The "machine shops" were built on the west side of Washington, later became known as the B & O Shops and operated until December 27,1965. At the height of its activity, the B & O Shops employed over a thousand workers in Washington. Mr. Ellis' two letters provide genealogical details about the Ellis family. |
