Scope & Content |
One copy of the original and one copy of a transcription of a April 12, 1863 letter written by Dr. John A. Scudder (1832-1896) during the Civil War. Dr. Scudder wrote two letters on April 12, both containing in part similar information (See Archives 2019.0059.0175). But this letter probably was not written to his wife, Helen S. (Van Trees) Scudder (1839-1922) in Washington, Indiana, because it does not have the salutation "Dear Het." Dr. Scudder was the Assistant Surgeon with the 65th Indiana Infantry Regiment that was stationed in Madisonville, Kentucky on the Ohio River when this letter was written. In each letter Dr. Scudder addresses his wife as "Dear Het." Company I of the 65th Regiment consisted of men primarily from Daviess County, Indiana. Both letters contain similar information, but it is unclear if he mailed both letters or just the longer version. This is one item of a large collection donated by Patricia (Phillippe) Champion of photos, books, documents, letters, obituaries, death and birth documents, newspapers and deeds. |
