August 18, 1897 edition of The Washington County Democrat newspaper published in Washington, Indiana. One of the stories on page one reported on the meeting of the Washington City Council which discussed the low water pressure which hampered efforts to control the fire that destroyed the Washington Graded School on Seminary Hill in Washington on April 19, 1897. The building was built in 1876. The school was in session at the time of the fire, but all students and teachers were evacuated and no one was injured. The building was demolished and replaced with the Walnut Street School and the corner stone laying ceremony was August 31, 1897. This newspaper was part of several documents, artifacts and newspapers put into the corner stone for the new school building. The cornerstone was opened September 17, 1971 and the contents donated to the Daviess County Museum. See 2018.FIC.4613.0001 to 2018.FIC.4613.0013 in Archives. |
