Scope & Content |
November 28, 1941 edition of The Elnora Tribune newspaper (6 pages). It was published every Friday in Elnora, Indiana. S. J. Richardson was the Editor and Paul D. Richardson was the Publisher. In the upper left corner of the front page is a small label on which is printed, "Maggie Boyd." One of the front page articles was about Joseph M. Smiley, who operated a hardware store on Odon Street in Elnora. At the bottom of the front page is a small article about Sgt. Leo Greggs, a 1936 graduate of Elmore Township High School, who was serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps at Camp Skeel in Oscoda, Michigan. On March 26, 1944 the B-17 on which Greggs was the top turret gunner was shot down over Wizernes, France. After avoiding capture for six weeks, he was taken prisoner by the Germans and spent 13 months in a POW camp. This newspaper was issued a week before the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War II. On the front page masthead for the first time are printed ads encouraging people to purchase "Buy United States Savings Bonds . . . For Defense." In 2024 Carol Nugent allowed the Daviess County Museum to scan this newspaper into its collection. |
