On the morning of February 24, 1892 forty coal miners employed by the Long Branch mine (aka Maple Valley mine) took passage at 6:15 a.m. on the Ohio & Mississippi Railway train at the Washington, Indiana depot intending to travel north 3 miles to the coal mine located on a branch of the Ohio & Mississippi railroad. When the train got within 3/4 mile of the mine, it stopped and backed up to the main line where the engine was detached. The 40 coal miners had to walk 1 mile to the mine and were late for work. All of the miners filed individual lawsuits against the railroad asking for damages of $500 each. This lawsuit was filed Charles Christler. |
