Pages one and two of the July 28, 1988 edition of the Tri-County News published in Washington, Indiana with a front page story by Ron Arvin about the 1938 Cornfield Conference held on the Homer E. Capehart farm in northern Daviess County. Capehart, a successful businessman, organized and financed the August 27,1938 Cornfield Conference. The successful Republican Party gathering attracted over 20,000 people and is credited with rejuvenating the Republican Party after the Democratic Party landslide in the 1936 presidential election. The conference also made Capehart a well-known national figure and launched his political career. He subsequently was elected to three terms as a Senator from Indiana from 1945 to 1963. During that time he was a vocal advocate for free enterprise, conservative values. Capehart was married to Irma Viola (Mueller) Capehart and they had three children, Homer E. Capehart, Jr., Patricia Louise (Capehart) Pierson, and Thomas Charles Capehart. This is the same newspaper as 2022.FIC.0210. |
