"Wabash Erie Canal/Irish Potato Famine" (File 35) compiled by Donald R. Cosby (1931-2023). It contains copies of several newspaper clippings about the Wabash & Erie Canal that ran from Toledo, Ohio to Evansville, Indiana. The Maysville Division of the canal was over 23 miles long from Newberry in Greene County through Owl Prairie (now Elnora) to Maysville in Daviess County. The canal in Daviess County only operated from 1853 to 1860. Also included are two articles: "The Canal Era in Indiana" by Ralph D. Gray and "From Kilmuckridge to the White River Valley: Irish Catholic Settlement in Daviess County, 1821-1850" by Daniel Gahan. There are several internet reports about the Irish Potato Famine from 1845 to 1851 that killed over a million Irish and caused another million to flee the country. Irish laborers were used to hand dig the canal in Daviess County. This file is in a four drawer, metal filing cabinet that has 153 research files compiled by Mr. Cosby who was Daviess County Historian from 2016 to 2022. See 2023.0046 for an index of his files. Mr. Cosby wrote three books: "Revisiting The Past" (2012), "Legends, Legacy and Folklore" (2015) and "My Scrap Book" (2018). His writings and research are now stored in the Research Room (Rm 303) of the Daviess County Museum where Mr. Cosby had an office. See 2023.0046.0001 to 2023.0046.0153 for separate catalogs of each file. Mr. Cosby's collection can be viewed in the Research Room. |
