Saturday, April 24, 1897 edition of The Washington Gazette newspaper published in Washington, Indiana. One of the stories on page two was about the fire which destroyed the Washington Graded School on Seminary Hill in Washington, Indiana on April 19, 1897. The building was built in 1876. The school was in session at the time of the fire, but all students and teachers were evacuated and no one was injured. The building was demolished and replaced with the Walnut Street School and the corner stone laying ceremony was August 31, 1897. Another story on page one reported the transfer of John Walker to the Daviess County Jail. Mr. Walker was charged with the murder of William Tow in Shoals, Indiana. This newspaper was part of several documents, artifacts and newspapers put into the cornerstone for the Walnut Street Building.
