| Scope & Content | A December 8, 1918 letter from Austin A. Zigler (1896-1934) stationed in France with the U. S. Army to his father and mother, Robert A. Zigler (1869-1942) and Mary Ellen (Overton) Zigler (1873-1920) in Odon, Indiana. The armistice ending the war was declared on November 11. Austin wrote about his combat experience during the war. He said he was most afraid of the German airplanes. "[When] Fritz . . . come over in his airplane with the back end open and begin kicking out bombs he sure had me hunting for dugouts lots of times." Also included is the envelope in which the letter was mailed. This letter may have been published in Odon Journal newspaper. In 2024 John & Sue Myers on behalf of the Odon Journal donated this letter to the Daviess County Museum. |
