Scope & Content |
A copy of a report by Jane L. Keith about No. 5 Hawes School in Steele Township, Daviess County, Indiana. The report lists the teachers that taught at the school. The first Hawes school was a one room frame building constructed in 1878. As attendance continued to increase, the frame building was moved to the Charles Ellis farm and replaced on the same site in 1901 with a two story brick school. The 1901 building was last used a school in 1925. The school was named after Aaron Burr Hawes, a one-time prominent citizen in Steele Township. He was convicted in the 1891 arson fire of the Daviess County Courthouse. This is the same report as 2020.FIC.0088.0004. |
