Two copies of the original and three copies of a transcription of the February 18, 1863 letter written by Dr. John A. Scudder (1832-1896) to his wife, Helen S. (Van Trees) Scudder (1839-1922) in Washington, Indiana during the Civil War. Dr. Scudder was the Assistant Surgeon with the 65th Indiana Infantry Regiment that was stationed in Rumsey, Kentucky, on the Green River just south of the Ohio River in western Kentucky, when this letter was written. In each letter Dr. Scudder addresses his wife as "Dear Het." Company I of the 65th Regiment consisted of men primarily from Daviess County, Indiana. This is one item of a large collection donated by Patricia (Phillippe) Champion of photos, books, documents, letters, obituaries, death and birth documents, newspapers and deeds. |
