Letter to the Editor in the October 12, 1965 edition of the Washington Times-Herald written by Martha Risley about the Old City Cemetery and Old Catholic City Cemetery on the north side of Bedford Road in Washington, Indiana. Ms. Risley, the daughter of Stella (Mulholland) Bogner, objected to the plan of the Washington School Board to use the two cemeteries (known as Memorial Park) for a paved parking lot for the new high school gymnasium on the south side of Bedford Road. Ms. Risley noted several Washington forefathers, war veterans and Catholic families buried in both cemeteries. Ms. Risley's campaign was unsuccessful and the two cemeteries were converted to a parking lot and tennis courts. Barbara Sims Waggoner in Volume 6 of "Cemeteries Of Daviess County, Indiana" (1990-1992) describes on p. 267 and p. 282 what happened to both cemeteries: "This Cemetery was destroyed." See 2017.FIC.2619.0001 in Library. Ms. Waggoner in her book does provide a list of persons buried in each cemetery. |
