October 3, 1862 letter from 25 year old Private Joseph E. Morris (1837-1909) to his parents in Jennings County, Indiana. He was serving with Company E of the 82nd Indiana Infantry Regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War. Joseph writes his unit is stationed at Shephardsville, Kentucky just south of Louisville. He describes a bridge that was destroyed by the Confederates. After the war Joseph E. Morris married Martha Emaline (Haynes) Morris (1837-1919) in 1866 and they had one child who survived to adulthood, William Haynes "Willie" Morris (1868-1908). In 1902 Joseph E. Morris purchased a 340 acre farm in Daviess County, Indiana on Edwardsport Road just north of Washington. Also included is a handwritten transcript of the October 3, 1862 letter. These items were part of a large collection donated in 2025 to the Daviess County Museum by John Steinhart, the 3x maternal great grandson of Joseph & Martha Morris. |
