Copy of the portrait of Joseph Hamilton Daviess (1774-1811). Mr. Daviess moved to Kentucky as a young boy in 1779 with his family. He became an attorney, settled in Danville, Kentucky, and was appointed the U.S. Attorney for Kentucky. In 1806 he prosecuted Aaron Burr on a charge of levying war against a nation at peace with the United States, but the prosecution failed. In 1811 he joined Indiana Territory Governor William H. Harrison's army as a major commanding Kentucky volunteers. He was killed November 7,1811 at the Battle of Tippecanoe leading a cavalry charge. The American troops were victorious and Prophetstown, a multi-tribal Indian community established in 1808 by Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief and warrior, near present day Lafayette, Indiana, was destroyed. In addition to Daviess County, Indiana, counties in Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri have been named for Major Daviess. This was one item in a collection donated in 2025 by Tom Brummett to the Daviess County Museum about Major Daviess and the Battle of Tippecanoe. |
