A November 24, 1918 letter from Pvt. Ralph R. Burrell (1893-1964) in the U. S. Army stationed in Belgium to his father, Harley Burrell (1863-1942), in Linton, Indiana. The armistice ending the war was declared on November 11. Pvt. Burrell explained what he had done since he arrived in Europe and was deployed to the front lines in France. He wrote: "It was our division (37th) and another which started the [Argonne Forest] drive . . . That was my first experience under shell fire. It certainly is a funny feeling to hear the shells burst near you. We were also attacked by airplanes with machine guns but luckily no one was hurt. I went through shell fire several times without a scratch." Also included is the envelope in which the letter was mailed. This letter may have been published in Odon Journal newspaper. In 2024 John & Sue Myers on behalf of the Odon Journal donated this letter to the Daviess County Museum. |
