October 24, 1967 newspaper article in The Washington Times-Herald and a copy of a second undated article about the October 29, 1967 dedication of Pioneer Park in Washington, Indiana. A memorial stone and flag pole were placed on a small plot beneath a water tower at the corner of Bedford Road and N.E. 6th Street "in memory of the countless number of pioneers" who settled Washington. A controversy arose when the Washington School Board in 1965 converted the Old City Cemetery and Old Catholic City Cemetery on the north side of Bedford Road, in which hundreds of people were buried, to a parking lot and tennis courts. See 2020.FIC.0996 in Archives. The Daviess County Historical Society (DCHS) was in charge of the dedication ceremony and Harold Allison, president of DCHS, was the keynote speaker. Father Kenneth Knapp, a Catholic priest, gave the invocation and Rev. Burl Shinkle, President of the Washington Association of Churches, gave the benediction. |
