Copy of the November 16, 1885 handwritten letter from W. W. Peabody, President and General Manager of the Ohio & Mississippi (O & M) Railway Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio, to William P. Ellis, Mayor of Washington, Indiana, offering to locate all of railroad's "machine shops" in Washington if the city would "donate 60 acres of land and $75,000 cash." The offer was accepted and the railroad repair and manufacturing complex was constructed on the west side of Washington. The facilities became known as the B & O Shops when O & M merged in 1893 with Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern Railway. The B & O Shops employed at one time over a thousand people and remained open until 1965. |
