June 28, 1904 letter from John Wilson Dodge encouraging Mary Jayne Peek (1884-1954) of Washington, Indiana to attend the Oakland City Conservatory of Music in Oakland City, Indiana. Ms. Peek was born in Veale Township, Daviess County, Indiana and was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John M. and Ella (Chapman) Peek. Mary Jayne was an accomplished vocalist. Ms. Peek married Hugh F. McKernan, Jr. in 1904, but she filed for divorce in 1906. She later married Fenton R. Mathews. They had two sons, William "Billy," and John Fenton. Billy died accidentally at age 13. Both Mr. & Mrs. Mathews attended the Illinois College, Conservatory of Music in Jacksonville, Illinois from 1911 to 1913. She was a soprano student and Mr. Mathews played the violin. Mr. & Mrs. Mathews lived most of their married life in Birmingham, Michigan. |
