A May 23, 1979 "Exploring Hoosierland" article, "Elizabeth Johnson Frontier Heroine," written by Harold W. Allison (1936-2024) of Washington, Indiana about his 3x great grandmother, Elizabeth (Lindsay) Johnson, who settled near Vincennes in 1785 with her husband, James Johnson. While Mr. Johnson was away from their frontier cabin, three Indians with war paint tried to break into the Johnson home. To protect herself and her two young children, Mrs. Johnson killed the three Indians with an ax. At the end of the article, Mr. Allison traces his genealogy back to Mr. & Mrs. Johnson and provides details about the Johnson, Wallace, Chapman, Stafford and Allison families. Mr. Allison worked for the U. S. Postal Service. He was a "naturalist" for 50 years, gathering and sharing information about Indiana's natural wonders. He authored five books and wrote a weekly newspaper column about nature, trees, flora and fauna . He was a past president of the Daviess County Historical Society that operates the Daviess County Museum in Washington. |
